If you follow my Twitter feed you’ll notice that Karen Hurlebusch (@khurlebusch) and I have been working on a rush freelance project for a good part of this week. For this project I was commissioned to do a few custom cartoons. Below are the finished cartoons in black and white and then in color as well. I post them this way to show the dramatic and subtle differences that color can make to artwork, but also to show that – done well – black and white artwork can be just as striking too.

I learned a lot with this project. Being that this was my first professional illustration only commission (meaning that the only thing I had to do on this was draw the cartoons) I sort of underestimated the time it would take to just design the characters, let alone draw and ink and color them, so it came right down to crunch time on getting the work done by the deadline. I also learned that I can push myself a lot harder and farther than I realized to get quality work done in a short amount of time AND my last major epiphany was that commission work can be fun.
In the end the client loved the finished project and is going to commission the two of us to do more work for them in the near future. So, all-in-all, I call it a successful project
